Geocache Description:

Ammo can filled with all sorts of trade items in the area of the featured cactus. This part of the desert is thick with stickers and prickers. Wear boots and have preferred cactus removal tool on hand. Also, have your state trust land permit to keep from being stuck with a not so cool fine. Check out the website for more info: http://www.land.state.az.us/programs/natural/recreation_permit.htm

In a tribute to these fascinating cacti is this series featuring the great crested saguaro. My family was on a camping trip to the Grand Canyon when I saw a photo of my first crested cactus. Ever since then I find it a real treat to spot one on the desert landscape while horse riding or 4 wheeling. They come in all different sizes and shapes. As I come across more of these cacti I will add to the series. The photo on this page is an example of a crested cactus and not necessarily the one at the geocache site.

Crested Saguaros: Even when saguaro cacti grow in their normal form, they rarely grow symmetrically. Saguaros sometimes grow in odd or misshapen forms. The growing tip occasionally produces a fan-like form which is referred to as crested or cristate. These crested saguaros are somewhat rare.
Biologists disagree as to why some saguaros grow in this unusual form. Some speculate that it is a genetic mutation. Others say it is the result of a lightning strike or freeze damage. At this point we simply do not know what causes this rare, crested form.
