Geocache Description:

The oldest active geocache on the Sunshine Coast is: “Gnome for the Holidays” (GC308C) and it is located a distance up Chapman Creek from Brookman Park and it was set out by ‘Shybudda’ on 31 December 2001. This is a busy time of the year and rather than pick the actual 10th anniversary date, I chose one a little earlier and hopefully a little less busy than New Years Eve.

So, mark 10 December 2011 at 10:00am on your calendars.

The lowest geocache number still on record that I could find is GC4 and it was set out on 07 May 2000. The lowest numbered one that I have personally found is GC92, the “Un-Original Stash” set out on 22 October 2000. It is located within 25 metres or so of the very first geocache and is located south east of Portland, OR. There is a plaque at the original location and that geocache is called “Original Stash Tribute Plaque” (GCGV0P).

Other early ones that I have found are: “Treehugger (BC’s First Cache)” (GC1DD). It was set out on 02 February 2001 and I found it on 02 February 2011. My next oldest one was “The Map Maker Virtual Cache” (GC5D6) and it was set out on 31 March 2001 and I found it on 30 March 2011. One was on the tenth year anniversary and the other was only off by one day from its tenth year anniversary and both of my find dates were by accident and not by design.

I signed up to Geocaching.com on 16 January 2002 after reading about it in one of the Vancouver Newspapers. I had had at least one handheld GPS by that point but I was too busy at work to even think about geocaching. However, on 07 June 2009 I got into it again and found my first geocache and I have enjoyed the sport ever since.

This Meet and Greet will be held in Sechelt’s new Mission Point Park. Bring your GPS and if you have any questions about how to use it, we will try to help you out. Bring your compass if you have one and like your GPS, if you have any questions about how to use it, we will try to help you out with it as well.

I hope to have two or three new geocaches set out and available for that day although I don’t expect them to be published until the next day or two afterwards. At least two of them will be within walking distance and the third might be within a short drive or a slightly longer walk. I will have two new uncirculated geocoins as give-aways and I will try to gather up some other prizes as well. Late flash: LANDSHARKZ.CA has just offered to donate some prizes for the event.

We have some new geocachers on the Coast now and some veterans as well so come out and put a face to the name. We hope to see you there.
