The cache is in a small round black tub room for a few swaps
This is another in the series of caches that we are hoping to add more to as time allows. They will be placed around rural Herefordshire to introduce you to some of the delightful village churches. If you already live in the area you will no doubt know of some, if not all of these locations. The churches will either be in a lovely location or have an unusual or interesting fact to warrant a cache. The actual caches will not be in the church grounds but placed a short distance away.
St Mary Magdalene Church
Tradition has it that several centuries ago two pious ladies disagreed where to build a church to serve the two local parishes of Vowchurch and Turnastone. ‘I vow I will build my church before you turn a stone of yours’: hence the neighbouring churches of Vowchurch and Turnastone. Turnastone is one of the smallest parishes in Herefordshire.
The late 12th century building still retains its Norman doorway also the 13th century nave windows. The wagon roof and an elaborately engraved canopied tombstone in the chancel are both from the Tudor period. The font which has a marble bowl is about 700 years old.
Just beyond the church is the old village shop, where you can still see the antique petrol pumps. This is a great bit of nostalgia for the older geocachers.
If you wish to walk to St margarets church to another cache
GC37HBA follow the Herefordshire trail which can be found just past the old shop on the left near the bend in the road. We have placed further caches along this trail GC 372AA, GC 372AT, GC 372B4, GC 372B9
