Geocache Description:

This cache was hidden on 11/11/11, a fun quirk of the calendar. However, this day also marks a much more serious occasion. Ninety-three years ago, at 11 O’clock in the morning on the 11th of November, 1918, World War I officially ended.

Estimates vary hugely regarding the total number of military and civilian casualties in World War I, although low estimates suggest there were over 35 million, of which upwards of 15 million died. The number of casualties from each of the five bloodiest engagements of WWI, can alone be measured in millions: Passchendaele (approximately 0.85 million), Verdun (approximately 0.97 million), the Somme (approximately 1.22 million), the Spring Offensive (approximately 1.54 million) and the Hundred Days Offensive (approximately 1.86 million).

Here are a few of the other battles and engagements of World War I, some of which may be familiar, and others that perhaps won’t be...

Vimy Ridge (began 9th April 1917)
Arras (began 1st October 1914)
Chateau-Thierry (began 3rd June 1918)
Zeebrugge (began 23rd April 1918)
Belleau Wood (began 6th June 1918)
Tannenberg (began 26th August 1914)
Es Sinn (began 28th September 1915)
Krithia (began 28th April 1915)
Dujaila (began 8th March 1916)
Neuve Chapelle (began 10th March 1915)
Wadi (began 13th January 1916)

Ypres (began 14th October 1914)
The Marne (began 6th September
1914) Falluja (began 19th March 1917)
Qurna (began 3rd December 1914)
Gallipoli (began 18th December 1915)
Beersheba (began 31st October 1917)
The Isonzo (began 23rd June 1915)
Jutland (began 31st May 1916)
Otranto Straits (began 14th May 1917)
Heligoland Bight (began 28th August 1914)
Lutsk (began 4th June 1916)

Unsurprisingly, WWI became known as The Great War, or The War To End War. Yet less than 21 years later, an even more devastating conflict began. World War II claimed somewhere between 40 and 78 million lives, although it’s generally believed that at least 60 million died. This represented over 2.5% of the World’s population at that time.
