The Cache to Eagle series highlights service projects conducted
by Eagle Scout candidates. This is the seventh in the series of
caches highlighting Eagle Scout services projects in the
Trailblazer District of Northern Star Council, BSA.
This particular Eagle Scout service project began in April 2011
with planning meetings and getting approval from the National
Guard. Approval was granted in mid-May with further planning and
design discussions through the summer. The project was completed on
August 21, 2011. There were a total of 300.75 man hours of service
dedicated to this project from twenty-eight different people,
mainly Scouts and parents from Troop 313, which serves the
communities of Olivia, Bird Island and Lake Lillian.
The project involved beautifying the Flag Memorial Park in honor
of the men and women who have served our country. The idea
originated when Sgt. James Wertish was killed in the line of duty
and the Eagle Scout candidate wanted to do something that would
honor not only Sgt. Wertish, but all the men and women who serve
our country. The old, overgrown landscaping was cleaned up and/or
removed, and new landscape block were installed to provide a more
defined planting bed. Many new shrubs and flowers were planted and
finally the bed was covered with a layer of mulch.
Note that each "Cache to Eagle" cache has a designated code
word, which is one of the twelve points of the Scout Law. Anyone
who finds twelve "Cache to Eagle" caches and emails with the Cache
# and the related point of the Scout Law is eligible to receive a
special "Cache to Eagle" patch.
Note on the cache: This is a Letter-box Hybrid. Please leave the
stamp in the cache. You will need to bring your own ink. I didn't
want it freezing over the winter. Cache is not difficult. Please be
very respectful of the site. A lot of hard work went into it.
