Una suggestiva grotta lungo i Monti Pisani, abitata dall'uomo
preistorico.
A suggestive cave along Monti Pisani, known by primitive men.

La Grotta del Leone si trova lungo la strada che costeggia il Monte
Pisano tra Asciano ed Agnano; sul lato est il pavimento scende fino
a raggiungere il livello delle acque di un piccolo laghetto
sotterraneo. Al centro della stanza si trova un enorme masso la cui
forma, somigliante ad un leone, ha suggerito il nome dato alla
Grotta. Sul lato nord un’apertura conduce ad una seconda
camera interna, raggiungibile anche salendo dal lato ovest e
calandosi per un piccolo passaggio.
Fu scavata negli anni ’50 da E. Tongiorgi. Vi furono
rinvenuti resti di industrie litiche del Paleolitico superiore ma
più importante è la frequentazione durante il Neolitico con
importanti testimonianze di culti: in particolare furono
identificati culti agrari, attestati da un focolare con grano e da
circoli di pietre con ossa umane. Forse vi furono anche culti delle
acque, collegabili alla presenza del laghetto. Vennero rinvenuti
anche resti di sepolture dell’età del Rame con armi in
metallo e selce e ornamenti su osso e conchiglia.
La Grotta è facilmente accessibile: lasciate l’auto poco dopo
il cimitero, o subito dopo la curva (vedi mappa) e proseguite fino
al waypoint1, qui entrate nel sottobosco e dirigetevi verso il palo
della luce visibile nella foto 4. L’ingresso della grotta è
proprio davanti a voi. La cache è un contenitore
lock’n’lock; è nascosta all’esterno della grotta,
noi naturalmente consigliamo di portare una torcia ed entrare a
visitarla, si può fare in tutta sicurezza e senza sporcarsi.

The Lion Cave is situated on the road that skirts the Pisan
Mountain between Asciano and Agnano; the floor comes down on the
east side until it reaches the level of a little underground lake.
In the middle of the cave there is a big rock, which looks like a
lion, that's the reason why the cave got its particular name. On
the north side there is an entrance to a second chamber, that can
be reached to a second way (going upstairs to the west side and
down in a little passage).
In the cave there was found rests of Paleolithic and Neolithic,
like circles of stones with human bones, and rests of the Copper
era (metal and stone weapons, and ornaments made by bones and
shells).
The cave can be easily reached: you can park the car after the
cemetery, or immediately after the turn of the street (see map),
walk to waypoint1 and then enter in the bushes. You can see a light
pole (see photo 4), the entrance of the cave is just after it. The
cache is a lock’n’loch container; it is hidden outside
the cave, but for us the best thing is to bring a torch and enter
to visit, you can make it without problems.
