Geosplash Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Rapczynskier: Seems like this cache is missing, and I no longer live in the area to check on it (sorry for the potential litter). Archiving to free up the area, as I haven't received any interest in adoption. Hope everyone still enjoyed the hike!

Geocache Description:

This cache is located on the west side of the Stone Valley Trail in Colton, NY.

UPDATE [4/16/20]: This cache is up for adoption. I no longer live in Colton and would like someone to continue maintaining this popular geocache. Please send me a message if interested.

UPDATE [6/8/16]: Cache container has been replaced with a brown waterproof tube, similar to the original, but a little smaller in size. Please make sure cache container is secure when re-hiding it!

Stone Valley is a beautiful trail year round and the majority of it stays close to the raging waterfalls and rapids of the Raquette River. When the river is low there are multiple spots to walk out on the rocks normally covered when the dam is released. They provide some great places to take a break while hiking or even swim on a hot day. However if you don’t make it when the water is low, you might be lucky enough to see some kayakers attempting the level 5 rapids (usually on summer weekends).

Please be careful and vigilant of younger children when venturing out on the rocks as they may be slippery and the water level can rise fairly quickly when the dam is released, which is signaled to hikers by a siren. There are signs that advise against going off of the trail and onto the rocks, so doing so it at your own risk. Don’t worry, the cache is not in any of these areas. In the winter the trail is very slippery and the cache will most likely be covered in snow.

The cache is a waterproof cylindrical container covered in duct tape. Blue diamond signs mark the trail. The hike to the cache is approximately 0.7 miles from the trail register and the area provides an overlook of one of the many waterfalls along the trail. My friends and I used to jump off this one in high school!

The best place to park for this cache is a small area off of Main St. in Colton, across from the Town Hall. From there walk down the dirt road and cross the bridge over the pipe to the trail. The trail register is right down the hill from there.

PLEASE BRING A PEN OR PENCIL AS THE CACHE IS TOO SMALL TO HOLD EITHER. Enjoy!

Keep hiking to find my other cache "C.R.A.C. Island"!

Congrats to psyrett for the FTF!
