Geocache Description:

The Centennial School historic building on Alpine's south side is owned by Sul Ross State University. purpose classroom and a shared conference room. Total square footage of the Centennial School Building is 21,010 square feet.

Named Centennial because 1936 celebrated the Texas Revolution's birthday, the school endured the last years of a rigid segregation in the nation. It was paired with the older Central Elementary which is still located on 5th Street and Avenue A. The old Central school, a turreted two-story brick building, is long gone but all Alpine's elementary students still go there to the new, one-story school. From 1969 to 1972 the Centennial school served as an integrated middle school, teaching all the grade 6-8 students. Those students now attend a new middle school on the west side.Centennial was closed in 1972 and though it served other functions, the building was neglected and deteriorated. These dates are presented on a chart marked “time line” in a display case in the newly renovated entrance to the school. The dates are difficult to fully comprehend and sometimes painful. Those years, after all, were the dying gasp of segregated schooling in America. Sul Ross State University bought the building in 2001 and over the past few years it has been substantially rebuilt and the surrounding grounds reclaimed. The renovation of the Centennial School Building was completed in 2003. The building currently houses the Big Bend Region Minority and Small Business Development Center, as well as offices for the Center for Big Bend Studies, costume storage, art studio, a general-purpose classroom and a shared conference room. Additionally, the facility provides office space for a number of state agencies, including the Texas Department of Protective and Regulatory Services, Texas Rehabilitation Commission and Texas General Land Office. Total square footage of the Centennial School Building is 21,010 square feet.
