Inside you will find TWO bags, One for
the Geocacher and One for the Letterbox
The mid-1950's were a period described by many as
the Golden Age of Automobiling. By that time, Route 40 served
America well, carrying more automobile traffic than any other
transcontinental highway.
Back then, if you needed to go from coast to
coast, there simply wasn't a better choice.
During its heyday, the highway ran 3,157 miles
from Atlantic City to San Francisco, traversing the midsection of
the United States.
When the Interstate Highway system came along,
many western sections of Route 40 were decommissioned. Today, Route
40 through Maryland is no longer the Major Route of its heyday but
a mere back road in History.
While traveling along Route 40 one afternoon and
enjoying the scenic sites, I passed something that caught my eye.
As I turned around to inspect what I passed I realized what was
hidden along this Historic Road.
What I found was a Route 40 Rest Stop, hidden by
time. Nature was taking back the rest stop.
The item that caught my eye, an item that was placed in all the
Rest Stops I’ve seen along the Route.
A Stone Grill/Fireplace. As I looked around I realized that
underneath the grass and leaves was still the blacktop and a few
other clues to verify my thoughts.
I couldn’t resist bringing other cachers to
this spot, to share a part of History that is slowly being taking
back by Nature.
There is NO Automobile access to this Rest Stop.
A drainage ditch along the road prevents access.
Parking can be found along the West Bound lane in a grassy area
right next to the GZ.
The Rest Stop is along the East Bound Lane
This cache has been supplied with LOG SHEETS,
STASH NOTE and WRITING UTENSIL.
For the Letterbox Players, Inside a marked
Ziplock bag is a Route 40 Stamp
( Designed and made by mfmanner ), a Stamp pad for your use and a
white tablet to leave your Mark ( or stamp) .
Enjoying and experiencing History should provide
you cover for your Search, but Stealth will be needed as you will
be in full view of anyone passing by along Route 40.
