Russell Square is situated just behind the British Museum in Central London and is named after the surname of the Earls and Dukes of Bedford, who developed the family's London landholdings in the 17th and 18th centuries. The square was formed when new streets were laid out by the Duke on the site of the gardens of his former London home, Bedford House. It was laid out in 1804 to a design by Humphrey Repton, England's foremost landscape designer of the period.
In 2002 the square was re-landscaped in a style based on the original layout by Repton and the café in the square was redeveloped. The refurbishment also included: new gates, improved entrances and new heritage railings, a hornbeam hedge was planted inside the railings along with new lime trees to reflect Repton's original lime avenues, improved paths and refurbishment of the Duke of Bedford's statue. An attractive central plaza was laid out along with a new fountain within a York Stone paved circle. New period lighting columns, up-lighters, interpretation boards, benches and litterbins were also installed. The remaining layout of the gardens was restored with grass and shrub areas planted with species appropriate to the early 19th century. The refurbishment received a number of prestigious awards on completion.
The centerpiece of the new design is the fountain with jets playing directly from the pavement, which have now become popular with children in the summer.
