Knot Hole gangs came about when baseball parks were built with wooden fences. Kids found the holes in the fences where knots had popped out to watch the games for free.
The St. Louis Cardinals sponsored the first Knot Hole Gang club. It is said that W.E. Bilheimer, a St. Louis insurance man, invented the idea of a Knot Hole Gang. Later grade school children were given passes to sit in left field past the foul line of Sportsman's Park. Kids could ride the streetcar to get to the park to watch a game. My aunt would wait after games to get her picture taken with the guys, and then bring it back later when they were in town for the players to sign.
If you come for this cache you'll be in knot hole land. You don't have to watch a game, but you do have to sign the log to get credit for this cache.
Enjoy your time in Forest Park, and happy caching!
