Geocache Description:

The park recently completed a prescribed burn on April 8th. Some areas are sparse, but the beauty in the park will return in time.

The cache was removed prior to the burn and was replaced on 4-13-13. It is currently in plain sight. Please do not relocate it in your effort to hide it better.

This cache has been placed with permission from Manny Perez, Park Manager, Lake Manatee State Park.

The main entrance to the park is located at N27 28.519 W082 20.796. The daily fee is $5.00 per vehicle (2 to 8 people per vehicle), $4.00 Single Occupant Vehicle and $2.00 for pedestrians, bicyclists, extra passengers, passengers in vehicle with holder of Annual Individual Entrance Pass. After paying the daily fee to enter the park you will find parking available at N27 28.550 W082 20.243. You will be able to access five caches from this parking area.

Lake Manatee State Park extends along three miles of the south shore of Lake Manatee, which serves as a water reservoir for Manatee and Sarasota counties. Visitors to the park cannot actually see manatees because of the dam on the Manatee River. The trails traverse several types of ecosystems including pine flatwoods and sand pine scrub with some depression marshes and hardwood forests. Along the trails you may find gopher tortoises. A variety of other animals are common to the park including indigo snakes, cottontail and marsh rabbits, bobcats, gray foxes, deer and eagles.

In the park you will find a boat ramp that provides easy access to the lake. Boat motors must be less than 20 horsepower. Canoeing and kayaking are also popular activities here.

The lake offers excellent freshwater fishing, and anglers can fish from their boats or from the park's fishing dock. Swimming is permitted in a designated area of Lake Manatee. A facility with showers is located nearby.

There is a large picnic area nestled in a sand pine scrub area near the lake. A picnic pavilion may be reserved for a fee.
Overnight camping is also allowed. Campers can enjoy full-facility camping, just a short walk from the lake. The camping sites are $22.00 per night plus tax. Water and electricity is included.

The park is open from 8:00 a.m. until sundown 365 days per year.

The cache is called Rat Boys Reincarnation because there was a cache placed here in the park many years ago with a similar name. The cache container is the original that was placed here in the park July 27, 2002. Please take some time to enjoy this beautiful park.

After parking at the coordinates listed above, DO NOT proceed north from the parking area. If you do, you will enter into areas for authorized park personnel only. The road that turns west on the north end of the parking area will take you to the park maintenance buildings. The road from the parking area that continues north will take you to the park rangers home. The trailhead for the cache is located near N27 28.530 W082 20.246, this is also known as the Gopher Trail. The hike to the cache is fairly short. Please follow the trails, no bushwhacking is required.

Please take a litter bag with you to pick up any litter you might see along the trail.

Have fun and enjoy the park.
