The abandoned Delaware Lackawana and Western Rockaway Loop was a short line that ran north from the Lackawana (now NJ Transit) Morris and Essex Line on the western side of Dover, up through Rockaway Borough, and back down to the Morris and Essex Line in Denville.
This is an interesting spot where a road used to cross over the railroad. The abutments are still in place, but the bridge is gone. It looks like the bridge may have carried Iroquois Trail over the railroad to connect with Rt. 46 at one point.
You can see the western half of the railroad on the right side of this map from 1906: (visit link)
You can see the eastern half of the railroad on the left side of this map from 1906: (visit link)
Parking is available on Sunset Trail where the railroad bed is adjacent to the road. There is also parking available across Rt. 46 on Broad St. Just use caution crossing 46 if you choose that route.
You may have to push through some brush and/or mud along the railroad bed depending on the time of year.
