Geocache Description:

Plenty of street parking available. Cache has log only. BYOP

Welcome to Palmer Park. The park, formerly known as Hamilton Park, gets its name from segregationist Reverend Benjamin Morgan Palmer who died in 1902 twenty days after getting hit by a streetcar. In the center of the park you will find an obelisk that is dedicated to the men and women from the Carrolton area who served in World War Two. If you venture to the obelisk you might notice a basin attached to the front which has been cemented over while two small pipes still poke out from the monument. The basin was once a ‘perpetual’ fountain to recognize the sacrifice of those who had served. So much for perpetual maintenance. When I was a kid there were even a couple of water fountains in the park for those that needed a drink. Sadly, water no longer flows in the park.

In the past several decades, the park has gone through a general state of neglect and inattention, but in our post Katrina rebirth the local neighborhoods finally realized what an asset this park could be. You will find new benches and a new playground for the kids and of course you will still find folks who look as if they stay in the park full time. On the last Saturday of every month, Palmer is filled with muggles buying and selling arty crafts and some pretty good food.

The association that supports this park feels that the next upgrade for the park should be to bring back the water fountains and to possibly restore the perpetual basin. Go NOLA.

Update 5/31/2012: Water is back! Drove by today and saw work crews installing a water line into the park. It's just a ground port for a hose bib for now, but we did not even have a pipe before! Water flows again!
