This is the part of a short circular route in the Knowefield area of Carlisle.
The walk takes in both Hadrians Wood and Knowefield Wood. Wellies/boots are required especially on the Hadrians Wood path as I have never known this not to be muddy.
Hadrian's Wood is so named because of its proximity to Hadrian's Wall. However, the Ordnance Survey Map of 1926 shows that the area lies within what was once Knowefield Nurseries.
Hadrian's Wood in its entirety lays within what was once Knowefield Nurseries. If you look closely you may see traces of the old Nursery there still in the landscape. To this day there are still some remnants of the old hedgerows which once formed the old field boundaries of Knowefield Nursery. Certainly Beech Grove was one of the main thoroughfares through the 150 acre nursery.
This walk could also be extended to take in the Kingstown-Houghton circuit by turning north east on passing through the second kissing gate after this cache. Walking through Tarraby to pickup the K-H circuit then backtracking from Tarraby to complete this circuit.
There is a parking area at the end of Beech Grove at N 54 54.771 W 002 56.063, if parking elsewhere please be considerate to the residents and note that Beech Grove is on a bus route.
Please bring own pen/pencil.
