Mushrooms compliment almost any meal.
You can put them in omelets for breakfast, include them in your lunch salad, or cook them in a casserole at dinner time.
But can you grow mushrooms at home? Yes! Homegrown mushrooms are fresher, less expensive, and within easy reach, and growing them can be a fun family activity.
However, growing mushrooms does take a bit of work and a lot of patience.
Some items that you will need in order to grow mushrooms at home:
- Freshly cut logs, 3 to 8 inches diameter and about 3 feet long;
- Drill with 1/2-inch bit;
- Spawn (moistened sawdust containing mycelium);
- Hot wax;
- Water;
- Large bucket; and
- Fruiting blanket.
Instructions:
1) Drill small holes, 2-3 inches deep, in a diamond-shaped pattern in one side of the logs.
2) Push the spawn into the holes and seal with hot wax to prevent moisture from escaping and bacteria from getting in.
3) Soak the logs in water for a few minutes, then stack them in a shady area that is protected from wind and sun. The logs must remain damp, so consider covering them with a fruiting blanket to increase the humidity.
4) Wait for buds to emerge after a couple of months, and expect full colonization after 6-18 months.
Enjoy - and stay healthy. (BTW: Be careful - you know who you are - of those mushrooms you pick on the trails!!)
