This Oregon White Oak is one of a handful of trees that the City of Albany has designated as a "Heritage Tree." It is called "Messenger Oak" because in the 1950's, local folks left messages for each other in the hollows of the tree. Sounds like something a Geocacher would do, but not with a "Heritage Tree." (hint-- hands off the tree.)
The tree has a circumference of over 12.5 feet and a crown spreading over 90 feet. It is over 150 years old. When Heritage Mall was being developed, the Engineers worked to preserve the tree in its own space in the parking lot. And, yes, this is the tree depicted on the sign for "Heritage Mall."
