At 2028 Hours on March 13, 1974 a Convair 340/440 operated by Sierra Pacific Airlines flew into the slope just NW of, and below this cache. All aboard this flight died in the accident and the fire that followed. There were 36 aboard flight 802, four were members of the flight crew, and the remainder passengers. Per NTSB report #NTSB-AAR-75-1 the inpact location was N 37 19' 57", W 118 16' 14", and at an altitude of 6100 Ft. These Lats and Longs are clearly inaccurate for a major portion of what remains of the aircraft lies just below the cross made of aircraft parts. The NTSB report states that there was no mechanical reason, or other explanation of why the Convair should have flown into the side of a mountain that dark March night.
David Wopler Productions, of Hollywood CA had chartered flight 802. The passengers were a film crew who had been in Mammoth filming for ABC TV's Primal Man series. The dead included actress' Irene Bundy,and Jackie Tang, actors Robert Prohaska, Rick Ackerman, and Lorin Raymond.
The walk to this site is not for the weak hearted. Any way you cut it, from where you park, there is about 2000 feet of elevatoion gain to the cache, or a rather long rock scramble to contour into the cache. For those who do reach this cache your walk can be concidered a memorial to 36 individuals who died instantly, and unexpectedly.
Included in the cache (an ammo box) is a Geocaching Site Notice, a picture of and description of the type of plane that crashed, and the log book with pencils. There for the taking are a ball cap, coffee mug, survival knife, trout flies, tool kit, quartz crystals found not far from the cache, book "Sierra South". and a .049 airplane engine.
