In 1846 at the request of the United States government, 500 men, 33 women, and 51 children from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints volunteered to serve in the U.S. Army as part of the Mexican-American War. The Mormon Battalion was the only religiously based unit in United States military history. They marched on foot from Fort Leavenworth, Kansas to Los Angeles, California.
The Mormon Battalion camped along the Rio Grande between present day Garfield and Hatch on November 13, 1846. The guides directed the Battalion to turn southwest away from the river a few miles north of Hatch near here. This cache gives journal accounts of what they found here in 1846.
To find this cache from Hatch, drive north on Highway 187 towards Salem. Turn west on the levee road just before crossing the Rio Grande. Proceed north on the west side of the river. After passing a huge man-made rock pile on the left, the road turns to the west. Take the small road to the north and stay along the river. The cache is just before the road leaves the river towards a huge flood control dam.
