Geocache Description:

We have recently spent many months in Tasmania, and during our time there were able to indulge in our love of geo-caching. Among the wide variety of caches we completed, we enjoyed one series so much we have decided to use it as inspiration for our own walking path cache series. Our aim is for our series to provide the variety of hides and challenges the Tasmanian “Ulverstone to Turner’s Beach Pathway” series created by 2y’stassies gave us.

The “Eel Hole Creek” walking path was developed in 1998. The project grew from a concept developed jointly by the Churchill Citizens Association, Monash University, Kurnai College and the Mathison Park Committee. It was funded by the Department of Infrastructure and managed by the Latrobe City Council. The pathway starts at Lake Hyland on Mackey’s Rd, winds its way past the lake, through Mathison Park, past a number of local features including Kurnai College, the lake at Green Inc, the Leisure Centre and the Community Hub before entering a section of local bushland. The walking path finishes at a park and playground in Glendonald Estate.

Gippsland Regional Economy and Ecology Network Inc. is a Not-for-Profit Technology and Business Development Centre.
Green Inc. was developed as a home for some of Australia’s newest and most exciting business and technology ventures and as a Research & Development base for business utilising the research resources available through Monash University.

It lists its purpose as:
* To support intrapreneurial and entrepreneurial, activity, innovation and transformational change.
* To assist and promote research, development and commercialisation of sustainable technologies, enterprises and industries that will enhance and diversify the Gippsland and Australian economies.
*To develop an information exchange network that assists, promotes and raises business and community awareness of the sustainable development of the Gippsland region and wider Australian community.

The nearby lake was developed as a part of Latrobe City’s Stormwater management plan.

Eel Hole Creek flows centrally through the urban township of Churchill, in close proximity to University residencies, shops and public parks. The Creek was generally in a degraded condition, with turbid low flows producing a poor visual appearance. Much of the stream channel in the urban sections of Eel Hole Creek was heavily vegetated with reeds, which trapped litter and were flattened after flood events further detracting from the watercourses visual amenity.

The system before you was designed to alleviate many of these problems, and created a pleasing environment out of what once was a swampy overgrown area known amongst the walking Kurnai students for its snakes!

Kermit had a habit of being AWOL, so we have moved him from his original hiding spot. He is now a micro, and is much closer to his mates than he was before. He still finds that "it's not easy being green". Please bring a pair of tweezers to help extract the log, and make sure Kermit is secure in his hiding spot when you replace him.
