The Spirit of Rancho Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Hemlock: I have been looking at caches in the area that have been temporarily disabled for more than 6 months and it looks like this cache has been under the weather for some time. While I feel that Geocaching.com should hold the location for you and block other cachers from entering the area around this cache for a reasonable amount of time I don’t think we can do so any longer. Therefore, I have archived this cache. If you haven’t done so already, please pick up any remaining cache parts as soon as possible.

When this cache is repaired or replaced, just email me at hemlock@geocachingadmin.com or go to your cache page and email me via the link to my profile on the archive log. Please be sure to include the cache name and GC# or better yet, the URL of the cache page.

I will be more than happy to take a look at your cache again to see if it is still is within the guidelines for cache placement and posting. If it looks good, it will then be un-archived.

I want to thank you for the time that you have taken to contribute to geocaching in the past and am looking forward to seeing your cache up and running in the future.

Thanks for your understanding,
Hemlock - Geocaching.com Admin

Geocache Description:

Nearly-vacant section of the former Rancho Los Amigos south campus, near Garfield Avenue and Imperial Highway. Enter the area from Imperial Highway, go South on Ericson Ave; or from Gardendale, go North on Ericson.

My first cache; a chance to put one on the map in a section of the "Great Southland" that sorely needs some caches to bring some spice to it. Coordinates may be a bit off, since I'm still getting acquainted with my Etrex.

Container is 7.5" x 5" x 2.75" Rubbermaid clear tub with blue rim under some broken sidewalk concrete "rocks". Original contents:

  • plastic toy Arizona Night Lizard
  • yellow and black ZoomText trade show name tag necklace
  • '98 Kenwood Cup keychain
  • Clif Bar "the Ice Series" Orange Chocolate Chill (with Caffeine) flavor
  • L&H Power Translater Pro 7.0 neclace pen and bubble wand with bubble solution (trade show freebie)
  • 2 AA batteries
The area has a number of fenced-off, boarded-up buildings, where many a teenage party has happend at night, and county fire and police services have staged trainings by day. Stay out of them and you'll stay out of trouble--all those activities, plus earthquake damage, make them less safe than they appear. The biggest hazard in the cache area are some prickely sage bushes.

Rancho Los Amigos (the county rehab hospital, now only on the North side of Imperial Highway) began as a poor farm during the Depression, then became well known for taking care of thousands during the Polio epidemic. Later developed a reputation for innovations in rehabilitation in many areas including spinal cord injury, prosthetics and orthotics, and Assistive Technology. Budget cuts, the changing business of healthcare, and damage by the Northridge earthquake has caused this area to look like a modern-day ghost town. Some old employees and former patients (not to mention the spooked kids, high on whatever...) claim spirits haunt the abandoned buildings.
