[RO]Prima mentiune a orasului o gasim în Letopisetul Novgorodului, datat în jurul anului 1387. Primul document intern este un hrisov de danie din 30 martie 1392. Se apreciaza ca numele orasului a fost preluat de la Roman I Musat, considerat întemeietorul orasului. Romanul a fost de-a lungul istoriei sale unul din cele mai importante centre urbane ale Moldovei, fiind un ora? cosmopolit datorita prezentei mai multor grupuri etnice, cuprinzând, pe langa comunitatea româneasca, comunitati importante de armeni, evrei si o importanta comunitate catolica. Roman I i-a eliberat pe evrei de serviciul militar în schimbul unui impozit. Distrus în mare parte în 1467, în timpul campaniei lui Matei Corvin în Moldova, a fost refacut de Stefan Cel Mare.
Orasul Roman a fost resedinta tinutului Roman si a fost resedinta Tarii de Jos a Moldovei. Pâna la instaurarea regimului comunist în România a fost resedinta judetului Roman. Judetul a fost desfiintat odata cu reforma administrativa din 6 septembrie 1950, când vechile judete au fost înlocuite de regiuni dupa modelul sovietic.
[EN]The first mention of the city was found in the Novgorod Chronicle, dating around 1387. The first internal document mentioning it is a charter from 30 March 1392. It is estimated that the city name was taken from Roman I Musat, considered to be the founder of the city. The city of Roman was historically one of the most important urban centers of Moldova, being a cosmopolitan city due to the presence of several ethnic groups, including, besides the Romanian community, important communities of Armenians, Hebrew and a large Catholic community. Roman I freed the Hebrew population of military service in exchange for a tax. Largely destroyed in 1467 during his campaign of Matthias Corvinus in Moldova and was restored by Stephen the Great.
Until the establishment of the communist regime in Romania, Roman was county residence.
