This cache has been placed at the Madison County Transit Alton Bus Station.
The MCT Alton Station opened in November of 2009 and was the last of five area passenger transfer stations created to enhance transportation for Madison County residents. The other four stations are the Granite City Station which opened in 1993, the Edwardsville Station which opened in 2000 and the Collinsville and Wood River Stations, which both opened in 2006. The five stations serve as hubs and are designed to reduce transfer waiting times, create greater connectivity between communities, and provide an aesthetically pleasing, climate-controlled waiting area for passengers.
The six routes that serve these stations will connect riders to Madison County area stops, St. Louis area stops including Metro Link stations, as well as provide service to Lewis and Clark Community College and several major shuttle routes. The routes are projected to carry 500,000 passengers annually.
The 5.9 million dollar construction cost was a shared expense with about 80% coming from the Federal Transit Administration and the balance provided by the Illinois Department of Transportation and Madison County Transit Authority.
