The Hajdúszoboszló airport between 1939-1949 was used only in the summer soaring camps of Debrecen and Budapest railway-employed pilots. After 1949, from the former civil organizations a top state-organized paramilitary organization was created, which was established by the central Hajdúszoboszló flight instructor-training school. At the present main building and the permanent hangars were built. At the same time from Debrecen sport pilots is moved out to the 20 km the small town. They stayed after it, when the school of instructors in 1956, ceased to exist. In 1968, a reorganization of (lack of sponsorship money), the airport was closed and only reopened in 1986.

A hajdúszoboszlói repteret 1939-1949 között csak nyaranta használták vitorlázórepülo táborokra a debreceni és budapesti vasutas repülok. 1949 után a korábbi társadalmi szervezetekbol egy felülrol államilag szervezett félkatonai szervezet jött létre, ami Hajdúszoboszlón hozta létre központi repülöoktató-képzö iskoláját. Ekkor épült a jelenlegi föépület és az állandó hangárok. Ezzel egy idöben a debreceni sportrepülök is kiköltöztek a 20 km-re levö kisvárosba. Ök azután is itt maradtak, amikor az oktató iskola 1956-ban megszünt. 1968-ban egy átszervezés során (szponzori pénzek híján) a repüloteret bezárták, és csak 1986-ban nyitották meg újra.
Ez már a félkatonai szervezödés végnapjait jelentette, 1990-ben újra megalakultak a társadalmi szervezödések, ma ezek használják a hajdúszoboszlói repülöteret. Magántulajdonú motoros és vitorlázó gépek állnak a hangárokba, de helyszüke miatt sok a szabad ég alatt áll.
Maga a város - bár pl. ez irányú kezdeményezésként épült a korszerü irányítótorony - nem használja ki igazán a világhírü fürdováros megközelítésére a repülöteret.
A repülötér felkeresése nem jelent nagy kitéröt a világhírü Hajdúszoboszlói Gyógyfürdo és a hozzá kapcsolód vízi kalandparkok meglátogatása elött vagy után.
