Geocache Description:

Cache is located in Hungry Mother State Park a short distance from Marion VA on state route 16.
Effective January 1, 2009 Daily Parking Fees for Passenger Vehicles; Weekdays $2 Weekends $3

HISTORY: John D. and Mildred Lincoln donated 1,881 acres to the state for the establishment of a state park in Smyth County on Hungry Mother Creek in 1933. Later that year the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) began construction of Hungry Mother and five other state parks. Roads, trails, picnic areas, cabins, a restaurant, bathhouse, dam and sanitation system were all built by the 600 CCC men at the park between 1933 and 1941. On June 15, 1936, the six-park Virginia State Park System was officially dedicated with public opening ceremonies at Hungry Mother State Park in Smyth County. More than 5,000 turned out to see the park as Governor George Peery and State Park Director Robert Burson officiated.

As the cache name implies this container is situated along the orange blazed CCC Trail. At the GZ area this trail once headed up the ridge and was starting to erode so the park service changed the path grade. Cache is located about 25ft. up the hill from the new trail. The walk to this cache is .69 miles from the parking area at the west end of the lake. The cache is a 1 x 12 plastic tractor manual storage tube with a log book and small trade items. Please replace the cache as well or better as you found it.

EagleJ1970 Note:
In all Virginia state parks you have to have permission to hide a geocache. Stop by the Headquarters building in the park and ask to talk to the official in charge of reviewing the Geocache Placement Application you will have to obtain from them. Let them be aware of your desire to hide and maintain a geocache in the park. Most parks may ask you to “not” make the cache for Premium members to allow the general plumbic the opportunity hunt while visiting the park. All my caches have been placed by permission at Hungry Mother State Park.
