Srednyaja rogatka (middle turnpikes) is a former German colony founded in 1765 by people who came from Brandenburg and Württemberg. It was found very close to the road from Saint-Petersburg to Moskow. In 18th century there was a barrier (in Russian turnpikes) together with guard booth on the road. Now it’s the place between Pulkovskoe highway and Moskovskoe highway with park and three beautiful churches. Srednerogatskaya colony or, as it often called, Colony village was completely destroyed during World War II. The fruit trees on the odd side of the Pulkovskoe Highway have survived. Also there were the gardens located southwest of the Victory square until about 1975. Now it’s the place named "Olympic Village". In 1941-1944 Srednyaja rogatka was the secondline of defense of the city. The line of the front was souther of the Pulkovo Hills. Years of war and blockade greatly changed the view of the terrain. The pre-revolutionary buildings do not exist now, but the area was rapidly built with new residential houses in 1960-70. Near the Srednyaja rogatka survived four bunkers since the time of the war.
