About 40 km beyond Potchefstroom the R500 turns of south to Fochville on the southern perimeter of a cluster of great gold mines, including the well-known Western Deep Levels. Many inhabitants of the town are associated in one way or another with one of these mines.

Western Deep Levels is also known as the deepest mine in South Africa.

Fochville was laid out by two brothers Wulfsohn on portions of the farms Kraalkop (''corral hill") and Leeuwspruit ("lion's creek") during the First World war and named for Marshal Ferdinand Foch, commander-in-chief of the Allied forces in France. The town was formally proclaimed on 15 November 1920.

On 1 August 1951 the status of the town was raised to that of a Village Council and on 19 October 1966 the town became a Town Council consisting of 9 councillors.
Fochville is a gold mining town situated in Gauteng province in South Africa and makes out a part of the Merafong City Local Municipality which also includes Kokosi, Carletonville and Khutsong.
Mixed farming is practised in the distric, maize and sorghum being the principal crops.
