FARO DE TORRE DEL MAR
Hacia 1861 se proyectó erigir un faro en la zona de Torre del Mar. Comenzó a funcionar en 1864, pero su situación geográfica, cerca de la desembocadura del río Vélez y de una playa por entonces muy inestable, afectada tanto por los temporales de levante como por las crecidas del río, le acarrearon fuertes y repetidos desperfectos que acabaron con su práctica destrucción en enero de 1880. Hasta 1930 el faro fue trasladado varias veces de emplazamiento. En ese año se levantó una nueva torre que estuvo en funcionamiento hasta 1969, momento en el que dejó de funcionar debido a que, por un lado, quedó integrada dentro del núcleo urbano por la fuerte urbanización turística, y por otro, al haberse ganado tierra al mar por la aportación de arena, el faro quedó demasiado lejos de la orilla costera. Se hizo, pues, necesaria una nueva torre que acercara la señal a la orilla del mar. Estas nuevas instalaciones quedaron operativas en el año 1969. Posteriormente, como consecuencia de lo contemplado en el Plan Nacional para la mejora de las señales marítimas, correspondía dotar a esta señal de mayor alcance, por lo que en el año 1974 se construyó la actual torre que empezó a funcionar en 1976.
Se trata de una torre cilíndrica de hormigón armado de 2 metros de diámetro y unos 25 metros de altura, con alcance de luz de 13 millas. Su emplazamiento se sitúa prácticamente al principio de un magnífico paseo marítimo.

At 1861 was projected to erect a lighthouse by the area of Torre del Mar. It became operational in 1864, but its location, near the mouth of the river Vélez and a beach very unstable affected both by the storms as the river floods, caused strong and repeated damages that ended with it’s almost complete destruction in January 1880. Then, the lighthouse was moved several times. At 1930 was built a new tower that was in operation until 1969, when it ceased to work because on the one hand, was integrated within the urban core by the strong tourist development, and secondly, to have gained ground contribution to sea by the sand, the lighthouse was too far from the coastal shore. It was necessary built a new tower closer to the shore and it became operational in 1969.
Later, by the National Plan for the improvement of maritime signals, was decided provide a more powerful signal, so that in 1974 the present tower was built and became operational in 1976.
It is a cylindrical concrete tower 2 meters in diameter and about 25 meters tall, with light range of 13 miles. Its location is roughly the beginning of an extraordinary promenade.
