This cache is located in an area where you can sit and read about the history of Barrow in Furness’s iron and steel industry. The large frieze shows the different types of furnaces that were in use at Barrow’s ironworks and gives an idea how they evolved over a period of time.
Barrow’s iron industry took off when Henry Schneider discovered huge deposits of haematite in 1850. The ironworks closed in 1963 after the last of the local iron mines closed. The steelworks closed in 1983 where it was later demolished and now is the site of Furness College and Channel Side industrial estate. I decide to replace the cache with a grey Nano.
