For more than half a century Foster Hewitt, Danny Gallivan, Dick Irvin and Bob Cole have been the voices of Hockey Nite in Canada. HNIC began as a radio show in the early days, then moved to TV, and finally to High Definition which made the game much easier to watch on the big screen TV. Ron MacLean hosts along with Kelly Hrudey and Mike Milbury. Coverage typically begins 30 minutes prior to the opening faceoff. Ron MacLean hosts the broadcast, usually from Studio 42 at the Canadian Broadcasting Centre in Toronto. He is assisted by various hockey personalities, and the always colourful Don Cherry and his Coaches Corner. His rants are quite famous, even leading to CBC one year, instituting a “7 second delay” in the broadcast to allow them some censorship of his controversial comments. During the first intermission of Hockey Night in Canada broadcasts, the feature alternates between Don Cherry's Coach's Corner and Kelly Hrudey's Behind the Mask. Hrudey, a former NHL goaltender provides unique perspectives on today's NHL and gives the viewer an inside look at the game from another angle. During the second intermission, MacLean hosts the Hotstove, a segment that features hockey journalists from across North America, who debate and speculate on issues facing hockey. There are also interviews with players in between periods, during which the players often brandish towels with the HNIC logo on it. Following the game the "three stars" selection is announced and these players return to the ice for a wave to their fans, MacLean and Cherry return to give updates on scores and highlights from around the league. Only on rare occasions has HNIC broadcast regular-season games involving two U.S.-based teams, such as Wayne Gretzky's (#99) final game in 1999. The original theme song was an intrumental, changing over time to the theme song "The Place'll Be Rockin' 'Cause It's Saturday Night". This song was replaced by Kid Rock and Nickelback's version of "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting". Hockey cards and hockey trade items prefered in keeping with the hockey theme.
