Geocache Description:

This is a multi-leg virtual cache. The cache consists of 4 stages. At each stage you will need to find the answers to the questions to determine the location of the next stage. At the final stage you will need to email me with the answer to the final question to log this cache. All the stages are within a couple miles of each other. I recommend bringing along water especially in summer.

Modoc War

a.k.a. Klamath Basin History Lession #1

A long time ago two cultures clashed over ownership of this land. Today people are still battling over water rights. In this cache you will learn some history of the area and hopefully come away wiser.

Coordinates listed are GENERAL locations, you will need to do some wandering around to find the answers

Starting Point:

At the coordinates listed for this cache, answer the following questions and use the formulas to determine where to go next.

  • A = The number of Modoc Indians that attacked with hidden weapons.
  • B = The sum of the two digits in the day of the month this took place. (i.e. 24 = 6)
  • C= The number of letters and digits that are written on the namesake of this site. Do not count spaces.
  • D = The year this event took place without the first two digits (i.e. 1776 = 76)
Formulas:
  • XX = (D - C) + (A + B)
  • Y = A - B
Coordinates to next stage: N41° 49.4AY     W121° 30.0XX

Stage 2

Questions:
  • A = The number of Indian warriors that defended this site
  • B = The number of army troops that attacked this site
  • C = The year the lake was first drained, minus the year Indians started occupying this site. (Where there are two years listed, use the earlier of the two.)
  • D = The day of the month of Lt. Col. Frank Wheaton's failed attack
Formulas:
  • XXX = B - 597
  • YY = (C - D) + 5
  • ZZ = (A + C) - 12
Coordinates of the next stage: N41° 50.XXX     W121° YY.1ZZ

BONUS: Take either, or both trails for a great look at the past.

Stage 3

Questions:
  • A = The number of letters in the name of this location
  • B = The month that Lt. Sherwood was shot
  • C = The day that Lt. Sherwood was shot
  • D = The number of Modoc Indians spotted across the lava beds
Formulas:
E = A / 2
F = A - D
GG = (C * B) + D
Coordinates to next stage: N41° 50.E8F W121° 2D.GG2

Final stage

To log this cache, you must email me the answer to the following question or I will delete your log.
  • How old are the namesakes of this location believed to be?
BONUS: Take the trail on the north side to the top.
