Geocache Description:

Shipwreck site

The Conception Bay Whaling Wrecks Laying in just thirty feet of water these three Whale Catchers, the SS SPOSA, SS CHARCOT and the SS SOUTHERN FOAM, have been an excellent shore wreck dive site for local divers. Scuttled in 1964 by their former owners and left to the elements they offer a unique opportunity to explore a piece of whaling history, protected by the waters of Conception Bay. It is believed that these Whale Catchers were abandoned at the close of the whaling industry in Newfoundland. They had serviced the whaling station located at Hawke Harbour, Labrador during the mid fifties to the early sixties. In 1966 the local town council wanted to remove the SS CHARCOTE, which rises out from the shore, as it was considered an eyesore. This prompted a local group of citizens to form the Conception Harbour Coalition to Save Our Whaler. They considered this site an important and popular landmark citing the once thriving whaling industry that was located in Conception Harbour. These ships were considered a testament to a proud seafaring people. To remove the whalers is to remove a part of their history. The Whale Catchers remain unchanged to this date. They range in length from 110’ to 130 feet with a beam of approximately 30 feet. Visibility in the winter and early spring ranges from 100’ down to 30’. There is a harpoon gun mounted on one of the ships. A propeller is still on the SS CHARCOTE.
