Rydal Caves - Take 2 Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Royal Oak: This cache has been disabled for some time and as the owner has not responded to recent logs (Geohatter on 7 Sept) or logged into geocaching.com for some time I am archiving it.

Guidelines: "As the cache owner, you are also responsible for physically checking your cache periodically, and especially when someone reports a problem with the cache (missing, damaged, wet, etc.). You may temporarily disable your cache to let others know not to hunt for it until you have a chance to fix the problem. This feature is to allow you a reasonable time - normally a few weeks - in which to arrange a visit to your cache. In the event that a cache is not being properly maintained, or has been temporarily disabled for an extended period of time, we may archive the listing."

If you wish to email me please send your email via my profile (click on my name) and quote the cache name and number.

Geocache Description:

The caves above Rydal Water are a tourist attaction in their own right. The cache is hidden a short distance from the largest one.

The previous location was almost always flooded so I have moved the cache to a (hopefully) dry position. The contents of the cache have been replaced and the container is a good quality tupperware box. It was a bitterly cold but fine day with ice on the surface of Rydal water, the old cache had also frozen solid so I will transfer the contents into the new cache when they have thawed. The cache is hidden in a black plastic bag to give it extra protection.

The caves above Rydal water are as a result of limestone quarrying. The largest is the reason for the tourist interest in the area as it's nearly 40 feet (12m) high. Over the years it has been a picnic site, a shelter from rain and even concert hall. Students from the nearby college in Ambleside give carol recitals here (I don’t know if they still do, let me know).

Park at Pelters Bridge car park (NY366 059) for a walk of approx. ¾ mile. A longer walk is from the car park at White Moss (NY351 066) where in summer you can get an ice-cream afterwards. Both walks are on well-made tracks. Torches are not essential for the large cave but would be useful.
