Geocache Description:

the race track of the 50's for car and horse's
sad only training now
very small cach

Levin motor racing circuit opened in 1956 with its inaugural race held on the 14th January 1956 and was organised by the Levin Car Club. The track was approximately 1.77k long and was roughly the shape of a pair of racing googles. The first Levin International race was held on the 18th January 1958 and was 10 laps long, and was round 1 of 8 in the Tasman Series. There were 16 Levin Internationals held between 1958 & 1975 and featured high profile drivers from New Zealand and overseas, Denny Hulme, Chris Amon, David Oxton, Graham McRae, Bruce McLaren, Bryan Faloon and Frank Radisich all from New Zealand,with Jack Brabham and Kevin Bartlett from Australia, Jim Clark and Jackie Stewart from Scotland and Sterlin Moss and Graham Hill from the UK. The number of laps for the Levin International had gone from 10 laps with a race time of 9m 7.2s in 1958 to 84 laps with a race time of 1hr 2m 55.6s in 1975. The cars changed also, at the begining of racing in Levin the most popular model race car was a Cooper T with a 2249cc 4cyl engin and ran on narrow tyres and had no air foils / spoilers, but by 1975 the most popular model car was a Lola T with a 4995cc V8 engin, with other changes being much wider racing tyres, lower car profiles and front and back air foils / spoilers. By 1970 the V8 had become the most popular sized engin with 13 out of the 22 cars to start being V8s and this trend continued right through to 1975 with the last race being held on 7th December 1975 and the track was closed as racing had now moved to Manfield which opened in 1974. As a matter of intrest, the largest piston engin to race at levin was in 1958, it was a Ferrari 357 4493cc V12 and was driven by Ron Roycroft, The smallest cc & cyl rated engin was a Cooper MKX with a Norton 515cc 1cyl engin driven by Syd Jensen in 1958, but the largest cc rated engin was a chevy 4995cc V8. The fastest officially recorded lap was posted in 1973 by Graham McRae in a McRae GMI / Chevy 4995cc V8 and was 43.3sec. The Levin International was not the only race to be held on this track, other races held were the, Wills All-Comer Trophy saloon car race, Fred Zambucka Memorial Race, Tasman Championship Saloon Car Race and the Tasman Cup Drivers Championship. It was not only cars that raced on this track motorbikes and motorbike & sidecar also raced at Levin.look and see our race track

{The first meet at Levin motor racing track, a modified version of the famous Brands Hatch course, was in 1956. This circuit was anti-clockwise and it’s length originally 1.1 miles. Viewed from the air this track closely resembled a pair of goggles Formula One drivers of that era wore.
In its heyday, enthusiasts in thousands turned up to the racing, traveling by bus, train, and car to see four hours of motor sports.}

*** Sir Len Southward{ founder of Southward's car museam in parapram on the Kapity coast } was the last to drive the track. **
