Geocache Description:

This cache can be found at the historic Gomersal Cemetery. The cemetery is on Schmaal Road and it is best to approach this from either Lyndoch Road or Brock Road off of Gomersal Road as many of the other tracks are 4wd and Dry Weather Only Roads.

If you like a bit of a 4wd challenge then the other roads are for you!

The cache is WELL AWAY from any graves and you do not need to disturb any graves to find it. Please respect those who are buried here. Read the hint for a clue where it may be. It contains a log book and pen and plenty of room for swops and TB's/coins.

Take some time to stroll through the cemetery to discover some of the graves of the early settlers of this area. Some date back to the early 1800's!

Of interest are the graves of the Fromm family who's history links to Gomersal Wines. In this cemetery is buried Frederick Wilhelm Fromm and his father, Gottlob Fromm who planted the original vines in the area where today you can find Gomersal Wines.

"In 1887, Frederick Wilhelm Fromm, his young family, and his father, Gottlob Fromm, planted three acres of Grenache in the Schoenborn district, on the rolling Barossa country between Lyndoch and Tanunda. By 1891 Fromms had completed a small gravity-fed cellar in the hillside on New Mecklenburg Creek, and in the following three years they planted another 80 acres on behalf of Dr. G. F. Cleland of Beaumont, Adelaide. At that time, this was one of the biggest vineyards in South Australia. They also planted twenty acres of olives and twelve acres of almonds, remnants of which still stand". (information taken from: (visit link)

Perhaps after finding the cache, take a drive to Gomersal Wines to sample some of their amazing wines.

Gomersal was named in 1918 after Gomersal in Yorkshire, England which was the birthplace of the father of Premier A.H. Peake. Before that date it was called Neu Mecklenbuerg or New Mecklenberg by the Lutheran migrants from Mecklenburg in Germany. They built their first church here in 1864, which had to be replaced by a much larger one in 1925. It finally closed in 1970 and was removed following the merger with St Martin's Church, Rosedale to form the Trinity Church of Rosedale.
Rosedale was previously known as Rosenthal but was also changed in 1918. (visit link)
