Desmond Llewelyn was born in Newport, Wales in 1914. He fell in
love with acting whilst a student at Radley School and began to
'tread the boards' as soon as he left school. Bexhill's De la Warr
Pavilion opened in 1936 and in 1937 Llewelyn joined the theatre's
repertory company. He met a local girl, Pamela Pantlin, and they
were married in 1938. Pamela inherited a house in Bexhill's Old
Town where they fell in love with the fine georgian house whose
long brick wall fills one side of the High Street. They bought the
house and his family live there still.
Llewelyn was a loved and familiar local character and he gave a
great deal of his time to the town and in supporting local
charities and events. Tragically he died in a car crash on the A27
Brighton Road near Firle when returning from a book signing in
1999.
From 1963 until his death in 1999, Desmond Llewellyn played Q - the
man who created 007's gadgets - in the Bond films.
NB: You cannot park outside Llewelyn's home: The old High Street
is narrow and can be VERY busy with traffic at times. The front
door is set back from the road, on the left as you come up from the
station, and the house name is on the wall to the right of the
front door.
