For more than a century, the Toronto Hydro Electric System has been constructing camouflaged power substations in our neighbourhoods. The invisible infrastructure is impressive -- many residents have never noticed them. This geocache brings you to one of these substations -- maybe the most impressive in the City.
The over 275+ substations vary in size and architecture. Some facilities resemble Georgian mansions, others are humble bungalows, but most are faux houses that blend right in. This collection of Public buildings pepper our City, each built and designed in their day to keep a low profile.
Without a doubt, one of the grandest of these hidden gems is the Glengrove Substation. Known as the ‘Flagship’, this gothic stone building is located here in North Toronto (East of Yonge, South of Lawrence). Built in 1931, this ‘Castle’ most likely has the World’s largest oak doors -- check them out on the North side of the building. They make me feel like a giant is going to walk out of a Fairy Tale. The leaded glass windows and long narrow windows are reminiscent of Medieval times. It’s amazing to think that our infrastructure was designed so well especially since this building was constructed during the Great Depression.
Toronto Hydro is in the process of upgrading some of the equipment within the Substation. They expect the work to be completed by April 2012. Keep an eye out for Mugglers!
Please place back exactly as found.
