An hours walk there and back whichever way you go. Good conditions underfoot
There are two ways to approach the cache which is hidden in the remains of the winding station above Rookhope. Part of the Weardale mining industry, the railway here at 1,670ft was the highest standard gauge railway in the country. The track was finally lifted in 1943. There are two approaches to the cache one on a fairly level route from "Dead Friars" (no idea what that was all about) or an ascent from Rookhope. From Dead Friars you pass an old boiler from the Readgate windings just behind some sheep pens. The path is now part of the C2C cycle route so keep an eye out for cyclists.
