The Muppet Show, a half-hour long musical comedy variety show, aired on TV from 1976-1981. The action in each episode included onstage acts and frantic backstage activity among emcee Kermit the Frog, his Muppet friends and a live celebrity. The creation of puppeteer Jim Henson, The Muppet Show introduced us to many endearing characters, many of whom are being celebrated with caches in and around the Whitnall Park/Root River Parkway area.
Mahna Mahna and the Snowths
Mahna Mahna is a purple Muppet with messy orange hair and a furry green tunic who is most famous for performing the nonsense song, “Mahna Mahna” with the Snowths, pink, cow-like creatures with round yellow lips. The first Muppet version of the song debuted on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1969 and was re-staged a number of times on variety shows before being featured as the opening number in the premiere episode of The Muppet Show. The performance always follows the same pattern: Manha Mahna starts out following the structure of the song, but falls into improvisational scat whenever possible. The Snowths, know for their do-doo-doo-do back-up, attempt to bring order to the number, but their efforts are always futile.
