Mugs Away (1) Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

iPajero: The Buffalo Trail is situated in the beautiful Umtiza forest and we have had the enjoyment of walking it on many occasions. Unfortunately the authorities stopped maintaining the trail and for the past fifteen years we have spent many days clearing and keeping it in a hike able condition. We also arranged four CITO's where many teams helped with chain saws and brush cutters for 8 to 9 hours and our thanks goes to them. Unfortunately due to our age we are unable to continue with trail clearing and the caches along the trial have not attracted any cachers over the past five years. Very reluctantly and sadly we have decided to archive these caches but as the saying goes, ALL GOOD THINGS MUST COME TO AN END.

Geocache Description:

The listed coordinates will take you to the start of two trails in the Umtiza Nature Reserve. There are several caches placed in this forest.

To enjoy the full trail you need to SET OUT EARLY and take snacks and refreshments along for the day. A minimum of 5 to 8 hours for the reasonably fit is required to do the caches along the trail. Remember your boots, walking stick, hat, bug spray, sunscreen AND long pants as there are stinging nettles along the way. If you intend doing all the caches in this forest bring along your own pen and paper to calculate the coordinates for the bonus cache.

AS THE RIVER FRONTAGE SECTION OF THE BUFFALO TRAIL IS NO LONGER MAINTAINED AND BRIDGE HAS COLLAPSED IT IS ADVISABLE TO RETURN AFTER COMPLETING THE CACHE SWINGING MONKEYS 2. Each cache has a number after the name and we would suggest to complete them in this order.

In this section of the Umtiza Nature Reserve there are two circular trails of 1.5 km (Samango Trail) and 6.5 km (Buffalo Trail) respectively. The Umtiza Nature Reserve was declared on 5 July 1985 and is some 560 hectares of indigenous forest. The reserve is named after a tree, Umtiza listerana, which has a very limited distribution and is thought to occur in perhaps 2 or 3 locations. The tree number for the Umtiza listerana as per the indigenous tree list is 205 and you will see one on the left hand side of the trail soon after the final for this cache.

At the listed coordinates you will see two trail names. You will need these to calculate the final coordinates. Let A=1 B=2 C=3 etc.

A = First mentioned trail – first letter minus 2

B = First mentioned trail – fifth letter minus 1

C = First mentioned trail – third letter divide by 2

X = Second mentioned trail – last letter divide by 5

Y = Second mentioned trail – second letter minus 1

Z = Second mentioned trail – sixth letter minus 3

Final coordinates are S33 01 ABC E027 48.XYZ
