Roman around Kirkham - Hadrian's Wall (son of) Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

JAZZJAZZ: We have been deliberating for the last 12 months about our Caches around Kirkham and the Fylde. The Current batch of New Geocachers unfortunately leave something to be desired when compared with the previous generation.

Caches get replaced wrongly, gone are the "TFTC" and T4TC" and instead we get "Yeah", "Ooooh", etc.etc. So reluctantly we have to admit that "the fun's gone out of being a Cache Owner" - SO WE ARE ARCHIVING BOTH REMAINING SERIES !!

Today being exactly 14 years from our 1st Geocache find is quite a symbolic date to take that action.- JAZZJAZZ

The Cache is a drive-by situated at the highest point of the Fylde – chosen by the Romans as the site of one of their forts. The Roman fort at Kirkham is situated on the north bank of the Belisama Fluvius (River Ribble) on the Fylde in Lancashire, astride a Roman road which runs eastward to communicate with the fort at Ribchester, via the major industrial settlement at Walton le Dale which also gave road access north to Lancaster and south to a settlement near Wigan. The road through Kirkham continued west for about three miles and then abruptly turned north-north-west towards the end of the Fylde and the ancient seaport at Fleetwood. (Ref : Roman-Britain.org)

It's believed that the Romans arrived in Kirkham around 70AD, possibly during the expansion of the province under the Roman governor Agricola. A fort, possibly of turf and wood, was established on the edge of Carr Hill somewhere in the region of the Windmill house and partly underneath the present Preston Street. Some street names such as Roman Way give clues to the fort's location. The fort was later upgraded with stone walls but the stone has long since been robbed for use elsewhere. The site of the Vicus, settlement, which lay outside the fort and the Roman graveyard have provided a number of Roman finds giving clues to how the site was used and who was living there 2000 years ago. The Roman graveyard was located outside the fort by the roadside so that the spirits of the dead would not disturb the living! (Ref : st-michaels-ce23.lancsngfl.ac.uk).
