Selachian Attack Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Rayswrld: Four and a half years after hiding it and fifty years after the shark attacks I have to archive this cache. I should have done this a couple weeks ago when the bridge closure began but didn't want to because it was my first ever hide. But since the bridge will be out of commission for eighteen months I knew what I had to do. Perhaps in the fall of 2017 I will resurrect it near the new bridge.

Geocache Description:

This is my first hide so I thought I would make it an easy one. This is a park and grab.

Welcome to Matawan Creek Bridge.

The Matawan Creek Bridge was first completed in 1888 connecting Keyport to Cliffwood was constructed of an iron truss and wood decking. In 1915 it was replaced by a bascule bridge (drawbridge). This was eventually replaced by a fourth bridge. Then around 1965 a fifth and current bridge was built making it the first non-drawbridge on the site since 1857.

On a clear day you can see NYCity from the bridge and in summer months muggle activity can be busy, from cars, walkers, and bikes to boaters.

Most people recognize the name of the bridge in relation to the shark attacks of 1916. A great accounting of these attacks can be found here: (visit link)

The cache is a small, log only, container. BYOP There is no reason to climb in or on any dangerous places to retrieve. As I said it is super easy. Please park in an acceptable location. Best place is on east end of bridge. FOR SAFETY, DO NOT TRY TO MAKE THIS A TRUE PARK AND GRAB BY PARKING ON ROADWAY.

While visiting the bridge, walk to the center and look around. To the south you can see a large marina and in the distance Highway 35. To the north is the entrance to Keyport Harbor and Raritan Bay beyond. And in the distance you can see the Verrazano Bridge and NYC. In the summer you can stand on the bridge and watch boats go in and out under the bridge. Enjoy your visit.

Added notes:

I gave this a difficulty of 2.5 because in the summer it might even be a three because of boaters at the marina or restaurant across the road. But in the winter it is a one, thus an average of two. Also, this cache might be difficult to get during an extreme high tide because of flooding in the area.

Coords may be a little off but hint should correct the discrepancy.

CONGRATS to CoffeeIsGrand for being FTF
