Geocache Description:

This cache is part of the SC State Park Geocache Challenge. You are looking for a 50-cal ammo box, located in wooded area near the mansion 30 feet into the woods.

In the days following the election of President Abraham Lincoln, South Carolina Gov. William H. Gist was characteristically blunt: “The only alternative left, in my judgment, is the secession of South Carolina from the Federal Union.”

Today, Rose Hill Plantation State Historic Site interprets the life and legacy of the man history has come to know as the “Secession Governor.”

The son of a Charleston merchant, Gist rose from modest beginnings to be elected governor of South Carolina in 1858. By then he had come to accept the belief that South Carolina could protect slavery only by withdrawing from the Union.

Today, visitors can walk the elegant grounds, tour the plantation home, admire its beautiful rose gardens and explore other original plantation buildings. The site also includes a short hiking trail down to the Tyger River.

This cache is part of the South Carolina State Park Service Geocache Challenge. There are 4 regions within the challenge, with different numbers of geocache locations in each region. In each posted cache, there is a hint, a number that will be used in the formula given in the description for the regional mystery cache, leading you to the final cache in each region, 4 in total. And in that final mystery cache in each region is also a hint, a number that will be used in the formula given in the description for the “Finale cache”, providing the coordinates to reach the final cache, located at Sesquicentennial State Park which entitles the first 5 finders to a special reward. But to do this, you will have to have traveled to all 47 parks, and have found all of the caches! Good luck and most of all, have fun!
