Geocache Description:

This cache is part of the SC State Park Geocache Challenge. You are looking for a 50-cal ammo box, located on Nature Trail about ¾ mile in.

Days and Hours of Operation : Apr. 1-Nov. 30, 9am-6pm, daily.
Seasonal hours of operation Dec. 1 - Mar. 31, closed Mon.-Thur. Open Fri-Sun, 9am-6pm. Historic structures are open from 1pm - 5pm Sa-Su with guided tours available.

In the late 18th and early 19th century, a small plot of land along South Carolina’s western frontier served as a military compound against attack from the Cherokees and later a trading post.

Today, that plot of land is Oconee Station State Historic Site.

The park just off S.C. 11 (Cherokee Foothills National Scenic Highway) contains two structures: Oconee Station, a stone blockhouse used as an outpost by the U.S. military from about 1792 to 1799, and the William Richards House, named for the Irish immigrant who built it as a trading post in 1805.

Beyond the park’s historic significance, there’s a fishing pond and 1.5-mile nature trail, the latter connecting to a half-mile trail that leads into Sumter National Forest and ends at Station Cove Falls, a 60-foot waterfall that’s considered one of the prettiest in the state.

Walk the trails during the spring wildflower show or as the leaves turn in the fall for a particularly visual treat.

This cache is part of the South Carolina State Park Service Geocache Challenge. There are 4 regions within the challenge, with different numbers of geocache locations in each region. In each posted cache, there is a hint, a number that will be used in the formula given in the description for the regional mystery cache, leading you to the final cache in each region, 4 in total. And in that final mystery cache in each region is also a hint, a number that will be used in the formula given in the description for the “Finale cache”, providing the coordinates to reach the final cache, located at Sesquicentennial State Park which entitles the first 5 finders to a special reward. But to do this, you will have to have traveled to all 47 parks, and have found all of the caches! Good luck and most of all, have fun!
