Watertown Daily Times Watertown, N. Y. Saturday Jan. 21, 1967 Slalom Race At Lowenberg MASSENA — There will be a slalom race at the newly opened Lowenberg Ski Area Jan. 29. There will be different starting points for the various classes, including junior 1, 2, 3, and 4 and the open class, including Ski Patrol, ski instructors, and any of the better skiers who wish to enter. Lowenberg is at the south end of Chazy Lake, about 25 miles west of Plattsburgh.
Where were you 45 years ago? I wasn't even a twinkle in anybody's eye. I most certainly wasn't skiing down any mountains. Fast forward almost half a century and now you are caching at an abandoned ski area on Lyon Mountain. The ski area was called Lowenberg. I find it simply amazing and a bit eerie that the ski lift still exist. This cache is winter friendly. However the road to the trailhead parking area in the wintertime is not plowed. You will need to hike/snowshoe this section. It is just under a mile hike one way from the winter parking area and only several hundred feet from the summer parking area.
