Te Onepu Wet Land has been established over several years
largley due to the work of Bill Clark. It was recently offically
opened and while there has been a cache here for awhile '3 bridges'
it has become such a lovely area I felt it needed more
exposure.
I hope you enjoy all Bills hard work.
Following is an extract from the Whakatane Beacon on the
Opening.
Wetlands open on wet day
Wednesday, 09 November 2011
PERFECT WEATHER: Wetlands thrive in rain.
THE kaupapa of Te Onepu Wetlands was honoured by the weather when
they were opened on Saturday.
“Rain is great weather for wetlands,” the
project’s driving force Bill Clark said.
About 50 people attended the 10.30am opening.
Mr Clark said the previous owners of the property, Pam and Doug
Knight were at ceremony, representing the past.
“They used to have a dairy farm on the land,” he
said.
“The ribbon was cut by a four-year-old Onepu girl, Holly
Mees, representing the bright future of the area.”
Bay of Plenty Regional Council group manager corporate services
Brian Trott said the wetlands were developed on land owned by
Norske Skog.
“It’s been a five-year project that included walking
tracks and it’s now home to two native fish species, giant
kokopu and banded kokopu,” he said.
The wetlands were developed from scratch and contained more than
12,000 native plants.
