Le square Saint Roch Traditional Cache

Le square Saint-Roch est un lieu de détente, de flânerie sur un banc, ou un terrain de jeu pour les enfants.
Ce jardin doit aussi son charme à la présence d’arbres remarquables, on peut y admirer de très beaux spécimens de ginkgo, arbre de Judée, tulipier de Virginie, cèdre de l’atlas, albizzia, eucalyptus, oranger du Mexique, cerisier japonais, rhubarbes du Chili…
Les îlots fleuris répartis sur le terrain sont constitués essentiellement de plantes annuelles qui donnent des tons différents au fil des saisons.
Cependant, le square Saint-Roch ne fut pas toujours ainsi. Son histoire commence en 1587, soixante-dix ans après la fondation du Havre, un pré-de-santé est alors fondé à cet emplacement. Il sera ensuite un lieu destiné aux pestiférés.
En 1772, la Municipalité va le racheter pour en faire un cimetière.
Puis en 1865, un jardin d'horticulture y est installé. La Municipalité décide alors de transformer l'ancien cimetière en jardin public.
Dans les années 1900, on installe dans le parc un kiosque à musique où la foule vient écouter des concerts.
Après la guerre 14-18, le square Saint-Roch est rebaptisé Square Jean-Jaurès
Les bombardements du 5 septembre 1944, laisse le square complètement détruit. Une quarantaine d'arbres sur les quatre cents existants auparavant restent debout.
Le square va alors de nouveau servir de cimetière, provisoire cette fois-ci.
Le projet de reconstruction Perret va lui permettre de rouvrir en 1953, il reprend alors le nom sous lequel nous le connaissons aujourd'hui : square Saint-Roch.

The public garden Saint Roch is a place of relaxation, stroll on a bench, or a playground for the children.

The flowery islands distributed on the ground are essentially constituted by annual plants which give different tones as the seasons go by.
However, the public garden Saint Roch was not still so. Its story begins in 1587, seventy years after the foundation of Havre, an area of health is then established in this place. It will be then a place intended for the plague victims.
In 1772, the Municipality buy it to make a cemetery.
Then in 1865, a garden of horticulture is installed there. The Municipality decide then to transform the ancient cemetery into public garden.
In the 1900, they build in the park a bandstand where the crowd comes to listen to concerts.
After the war 14-18, the public garden Saint Roch is renamed Public garden Jean-Jaurès
The bombardments of September 5th, 1944, leave the public garden completely destroyed. About forty trees on four hundred existing previously remain standing.
The public garden is going to serve then again as cemetery, temporary this time.
The project of reconstruction Perret is going to allow it to reopen in 1953, it takes back then the name under which we know it today: public garden Saint Roch.
