On March 26, 2011 the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada officially designated Jasper National Park as a Dark Sky Preserve. Jasper National Park is currently the world’s largest Dark Sky Preserve.
What is a Dark Sky Preserve?
Dark Sky Preserves (DSP) is areas designated by the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (RASC) to protect nocturnal wildlife habitat and quality night sky viewing.
This location is an ideal spot to view the DSP, as its location is centered in part of the darkest location of the Rocky Mountains.
Did you Know: 97% of the 11,228km2 park is a designated wilderness area, free of light pollution, yet roads and trails provide easy access to excellent year-round star gazing sites. Many of the valleys in much of Jasper are broad and U-shaped, providing good views of the night skies.
In accordance with Jasper National Park guidelines no trading items are to be left in this location, nor anything that might attract wildlife
