Geocache Description:

This cache is located in/near a very historic area. Read the entire cache description for information on this area as well as important information helpful for finding this cache. NOTE: THIS IS A CACHE IN-TRASH OUT (CITO) AREA. PLEASE BRING OUT AT LEAST ONE PIECE OF LITTER -- ASIDE FROM ANY POTENTIAL LITTER THAT WENT IN WITH YOU.

Suggested parking for this cache is the parking area at the northeast end of the Morganton Greenway. Men from the mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee passed through this area on their way in pursuit of redcoat Colonel Patrick Ferguson and his force of redcoats and Tories. The Overmountain Men "treed" the Brits and locals loyal to England at Kings Mountain, where they killed Ferguson and most of his men and thereby greatly influenced the outcome of the Revolutionary War. More recently, at the the end of The War of Northern Aggression nearly a century-and-a-half ago -- even as General Robert E. Lee was surrendering what was left of his forces at Appomattox Court House -- it was where the Burke County (NC) Home Guard made up of boys 15-and-younger and men well past fighting age ambushed raiders from General Stoneman's vengeful Union cavalry and prevented them from crossing the Catawba River to raid and terrorize Morganton. Although repulsed here at Rocky Ford, however, the Union rabble led by General Gilliam flanked the outnumbered and outgunned home guard and crossed the river to the east at Fleming's Ford and went on to carry out their evil aims in Morganton, before moving on to Asheville. For an account of this that was written within a year of its actual occurrence, I recommend The Last Ninety Days of the War in North Carolina, by Cornelia Phillips Spencer, Watchman Publishing Company, 1866.

Some of the people of North Carolina are said to have hidden their valuables so well in anticipation of the arrival of the raiders that once the thieves were gone, some of the owners were unable to find their own caches. This cache of not-so-valuables is located just east of the former location of the Rocky Ford, along the southern bank of the Catawba River. It can be accessed from several directions but perhaps most conveniently by parking at the Rocky Ford end of the Morganton Greenway and crossing under the bridges and walking along the river bank on paths used by fisherman. Its an area that seems always in need of trash pickup, so please consider it a Cache In-Trash Out (CITO) area. I cleaned the bank from the bridges to the cache area when I put out the cache, and I would have included CITO bags in the cache if I had more room.

In addition to the geocache statement and log, the cache contains a number of small tradable items.

With the belief that most searchers for this cache will be Southerners, at least at heart, I have hidden this cache in such a way to minimize loss of life and limb, and I WENT TO SOME TROUBLE TO HIDE THIS CACHE FOR ENJOYMENT OF GEOCACHERS. PLEASE TAKE THE TROUBLE TO REHIDE IT AS FOUND TO HELP PREVENT LOSS OR VANDALISM.

Additional Hints (Decrypt)

[1. Its not yellow and its not in or over the water. 2. On a good day, and if you're high enough, you may see the raiders coming before they see you. (On a better day when you're even higher, you may not see the raiders at all.)]
