This cache is placed in memory of Dick Marion, professional scouter, and self proclaimed "Happy Camper". Dick passed away following a brave 4 month battle with cancer in August of 2011, 2 days after his 77th birthday.
Dick was active in Boy Scouts and earned the rank of Eagle Scout in 1951 here in Lancaster, PA. He pursued his chidlhood passion for Scouting throughout his adult career, serving Councils in Pittsburgh PA, Reading PA, and Rochester NY. In 1976, he became Scout Executive in East Valley Area Council in Western PA and moved on to lead the Gulf Ridge Council in Tampa Fl in 1981. In 1985, he became President of the Cradle of Liberty Council in Philadelphia PA where he remained until his retirement from professional scouting in 1998.
He achieved numerous professional awards including the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award by the Boy Scouts of America for distinguishing himself nationally in his profession and for over 25 years of volunteer service to his community. He was a founding board member of the Tampa Bay Latchkey Coalition and ACCESS Tampa Bay. In retirement he served as "shepherd" for the 3 and 4 year old Sunday School class each week, a mentor at the Catalina Mountain School (Tuscon, AZ), and was an active participant in Kid's Closet, which collected and distributed gently used clothing to those in need.
Dick believed that the best in life came from helping others. May you continue his beliefs in your day to day activities as you forge your own "Happy Trail".
Until we meet in the next great adventure...
Happy Trails from the Happy Camper!
